Daredevil Spinoff, Jon Bernthal Punisher Series, Officially Ordered by Netflix

Recommended Videos

I love Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil, but it’s certainly not a perfect show (what show really is?). After season two, however, one could argue that Jon Bernthal was perfect in his role as Frank Castle, AKA the Punisher, and now his rumored spinoff has officially gotten a season order from Netflix!

Rumors about the spinoff have been swirling since well before we even saw Bernthal on-screen as the Punisher, and Netflix’s Ted Saranados, chief content officer, said in January that it was definitely possible, but that we’d probably have to wait due to the scale of the Netflix/Marvel productions. Now, Entertainment Weekly reports that the streaming TV giant has made things official and ordered a season of Punisher with Jon Bernthal reprising his role (we wouldn’t have it any other way) and Hannibal producer/writer Steve Lightfoot on as showrunner.

EW expects Netflix to make an official announcement later today, so we’ll have to wait and see if any more details drop then, but everything else about the show is basically a mystery at this point. We don’t even know when it’s coming, but since Saranados said Netflix doesn’t plan to put out more than one or two Marvel properties a year, and we still have Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders, and season 2 of Jessica Jones on the way. It might be a bit of a wait.

[UPDATE]

Marvel has posted an official announcement along with a piece of artwork for the series. There’s still no information other than what EW reported, but the announcement reads:

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”
