The Dark Knight Rises‘ Viral Marketing Rumbles Vaguely in to Motion

Questions! Questions That Need Answering

It’s been a while since we saw a viral marketing effort on behalf of The Dark Knight Rises, and no wonder. In the interim, everybody involved has been pretty busy actually, you know, making the film. It’s been almost seven months since a creepy recorded chant and a twitter account lead us to our first look at Tom Hardy as Bane. But accounts seem to agree that many of the principle cast have wrapped their parts of production, and with five months of post-production, a sneak preview of the first six minutes of the film imminent, and rumors of a full trailer hitting sometime during the holiday season, it’s just about time to start creeping everybody out with fake CIA memos.

Observe:

Wired received this bit of heavily redacted CIA correspondence concerning the missing nuclear physicist Leonid Pavel. (click to embiggen)

The memo mentions CIA agents making contact with an operative that was seeking asylum in the U.S. for Dr. Pavel, and (for a considerable sum) would turn him over to U.S. authorities. As we can see in this transcript from Empire, the operative’s motivations remain unclear:

I trust the raw power of the internet will soon bring some new and interesting facts to life. Me? I threw Leonid Pavel into an anagram maker, skimmed the results, and then gave up.
