David Duchovny Has a Favorite X-Files Slashfic
Shoutout to that one time I found fanart of Krycek as a mermaid on Elfwood.
The X-Files fandom isn’t gone. It’s just dormant. And it got a big shot in the arm last week.
No, I’m not talking about shady X-Files announcements or David Duchovny coming back for the new Twin Peaks. I mean the New York Times’ brief interview with David Duchovny, on the eve of the release of his book Holy Cow. Taffy Brodesser-Akner brought up the wealth of fan fiction penned about the show, adding “some of it is pretty “Red Shoe Diaries,” if you know what I mean.” Duchovny’s response:
When “X-Files” was kind of in its heyday, that was the beginning of the Internet. I was very skeptical and thought, ‘This thing will never last.’ My favorite was the fan fiction that had Alex Krycek, my nemesis, and me as lovers. It was beautiful.
Now I know what you’re thinking. “David. Oh, David. There was more than one Mulder/Krycek fan fiction. It’s 20-freaking-15 and a Google Image search for “mulder krycek” is still about 80% Photoshop porn. Photoshop porn from back when we used to call them “photomanips” because Photoshop hadn’t been invented yet.” But instead of dusting off your Mulder/Krycek fic and sending it to Duchovny to see if it’s the one he was talking about, I suggest a different solution.
Instead, let us all believe, in our heart of hearts, that it was our fanfic. Let us, each of us, go about our days knowing that we wrote a slash fic about Agent Mulder, and David Duchovny thought it was beautiful. That’s the kind of world I want to live in.
