A fair number of big news items have popped up today. The Hobbit is being pushed back by five months. Tim Curry will be in The Clone Wars. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe have some interesting post-Potter films lined up. But there’s only one thing that made me squeal at my computer. And that’s that Gary Oldman has joined the cast of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This was my reaction.

According to NextMovie, he will play Dreyfus, “the leader of the human resistance — and, wouldn’t you know it, a former police commissioner.” That has me hoping for a combination of Crazy Gary Oldman from The Professional and Noble Gary Oldman from Batman, though however he decides to play it, the eventual confrontation between his character and ape Andy Serkis should be amazing.

Teenage actor Kodi Smit-McPhee, who co-starred in Dawn director Matt Reeves‘s Let Me In, has joined the cast as well in an unspecified role. And we’ve also leaned a tiny bit about Jason Clarke‘s character since he was cast, namely that he plays, in his words “a guy who’s trying to save humanity.”

That’s all good. But it’s not quite Gary Oldman-good. Very little is.
