Let’s Hurry Up and Wait for DCEU’s The Flash Spin-Off Film

As the DCEU continues to expand and take shape, there’s one character that feels left behind. While Aquaman dominates the box office and Birds of Prey is filming, folks are wondering what’s up with everyone’s favorite speedster, Barry Allen aka The Flash. Ezra Miller’s performance in the role was considered one of the highlights of DC’s gloomy 2017 Justice League, yet his solo outing has been plagued with delays.

Miller has, of course, kept busy with his other mega-franchise, Fantastic Beasts, but he took some time to discuss the developing Flash film and why it has been so delayed. Miller said of the film, “Anyone who knows anything about Barry Allen knows that he’s always late, but then when he arrives, he gets stuff done. And that’s definitely how this film’s production schedule is proceeding. We’re a little late.”

He followed up by saying, “But the reason why we are late, and this is the honest to God truth… We’re all — and I include myself in this — we are very meticulously focused on making a movie that’s not just one of the greatest superhero movies that we can possibly make. This movie’s also going to be a gift to the fans.”

Miller is currently waiting on a script from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming and directed Game Night. The film, which is rumored to be titled Flashpoint, will be directed by Daley and Goldstein, with Kiersey Clemons (Dope) joining as Iris West and Billy Crudup (Watchmen) as Barry’s father Henry Allen.

There’s no word yet on whether or not Flashpoint will include cameos from other DCEU heroes. Miller himself has made cameo appearances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Miller had a fun, goofy chemistry with Gal Gadot’s Diana, so it would be cool to catch an appearance from Wonder Woman herself.

Flashpoint is expected to film at the end of 2019, with a projected release date of 2021. So far, the only DCEU film release for 2019 will be the kid-friendly comedy Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi, which hits theaters in April. 2020 will see the release of Birds of Prey followed by the highly anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984. Joining Flashpoint in 2021 will be Matt Reeves’ The Batman and potentially Suicide Squad 2. No word yet on a standalone Cyborg film, which seems unlikely to happen at this point.

Of course, all of this could change and nothing is set in stone. The DCEU has been known to switch up scheduling, so take all of this with a grain of salt. Ultimately, Miller seems committed and excited about making the best possible Flash film he can make, saying “Honestly, we won’t make the film unless it’s going to be this consummate, beautiful offering to the fans and to everybody. We’re just going to make a fantastic movie, but we’re really focused on making it this super gift to DC fans.”
