Syfy’s Deadly Class Trailer is Taking Us Back to School

The teaser trailer for Syfy’s Deadly Class brings a stylized, violent re-imagining of high school life in 1980’s. John Hughes this isn’t. The show, based on the 2014 Image Comics graphic novel by Rick Remender (Fear Agent) and Wes Craig (Gravediggers Union), follows the students at King’s Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts, a high school that trains assassins descended from the most notorious crime families across the globe.

The trailer is bookended by video of Ronald and Nancy Reagan’s famous “Just Say No” speech, and introduces us to Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth) the newest recruit to the school. There he meets Saya, daughter of the Yakuza, (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before‘s Lana Condor) and the school’s headmaster, Master Lin (Benedict Wong). They are joined by María Gabriela de Faría (Yo Soy Franky), Luke Tennie (Shock and Awe), Liam James (The Killing), and Michel Duval (Queen of the South).Deadly Class promises slick violence and drama at a high school where the stakes are literally life and death.

The series was created by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Infinity War), who clearly know their way around a comic book franchise. In the featurette for the series, Joe Russo said, “Deadly Class is one of the more twisted coming-of-age stories we’ve ever read, it does an amazing job of exploring teenage years and the sense of alienation that you feel.” In addition to the Russo’s pedigree, creator Rick Remender is also working closely on the project. He said of the adaptation, “Fans of the comic book are going to be delighted. Deadly Class is authentic, honest, and brutal. The threats are real.”

Bill McGoldrick, the president of scripted content for NBCUniversal, said of the series, “We’re committed to developing graphic novels for Syfy and have found a rich, compelling, truly unique world in ‘Deadly Class. Our producing partners expertly combined high school angst, 80s nostalgia and comic flair into a beautifully realized, visually arresting pilot that truly brings Rick and Wes’ acclaimed comic series to life.”

With the talent attached and the stylish trailer, Deadly Class is giving us yet another comic book adaptation to look forward to in 2019. The only question will be, how do we make the time for all these upcoming comic book series? What a time to be a nerd.
