Check Out this Killer Concept Art for Deadpool 2 Featuring the Fantastic Four
Is The Thing wearing overalls?
Illustrator Alexander Lozano has released some character designs for Deadpool 2 on Instagram, which include a surprise appearance from the Fantastic Four. The concept art stems from Tim Miller’s version of the film, who was set to direct the sequel after helming the smash hit original. Miller subsequently left Deadpool 2 over creative differences, and David Leitch (Atomic Blonde) took over directorial duties.
It’s unclear how big of a role the Fantastic Four would have played in Deadpool 2, which was already jam packed with superhero cameos and supporting characters (X-Force, we hardly knew ye). While Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot was a critical and commercial flop, Lozano’s gorgeous artwork has us wondering what might have been.
I love seeing concept art because it gives you an idea of how characters and worlds get formed, and the changes they go through on their way to the big screen. For example, look at how different Lozano’s renderings of Domino and Cable look compared to how they eventually turned out:
Lozano also gives us a peek at Blaquesmith, a friend of Cable’s from the future. Blaquesmith is a mutant with the ability to transform anything into a weapon and can master any weapon he finds. The character was ultimately not included in Deadpool 2.
While its unlikely that we’ll be seeing another Fantastic Four film anytime soon, the impending Disney-Fox merger means that almost all of Marvel’s toys are going to wind up in the same sandbox. Only time will tell how this will all play out as the MCU grows ever more expansive.Besides, the X-Force is gonna need some fresh blood, right?
