Mom's being a real Andrew Garfield with the denials though.

Did you think that we were done with rumors about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Did you think that every last possible cameo had been combed through and obsessed over? Well, the rumors are still rolling in! The latest one is that Deadpool will finally make his MCU debut in Doctor Strange’s new solo outing. But is there any truth to it? Here’s what we know!

A Multiverse Full of Cameos

A few months ago, a lot of the rumored cameos and appearances in Doctor Strange 2 were so ridiculous that they were comical. I mean, come on, Professor X? Tom Cruise? Get out of here with that nonsense.

But the MCU is nothing if not gloriously ridiculous, and rumor after rumor is turning out to be true. Professor X was all but confirmed in the Super Bowl trailer, in which you can hear Patrick Stewart’s voice. The Illuminati has been confirmed, and Iron Man is traditionally a member, which means that the Tom Cruise cameo is looking more and more likely. Hollywood Reporter reported back in July that Tom Hiddleston will make an appearance as Loki, and a cast list on IMDB lists stunt doubles for Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, and Owen Wilson. If this movie is serving as Marvel’s next big event instead of just one character’s solo adventure, then it actually makes a lot of sense to cram in as many characters as possible.

Plus, the MCU has recently been debuting more and more characters in cameos and post-credit scenes. Starfox and Blade first appeared in the post-credit scenes in Eternals, Daredevil made a brief appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye. If Phases 1-3 revolved around the Avengers, Phase 4 is clearly going for a much more expansive multiversal cast of characters.

What We Know So Far

The first hint that Deadpool might be making an appearance came from the Doctor Strange poster, which already seems to have confirmed the presence of Captain Carter by showing a bit of her shield in one of the shards of glass surrounding Strange. Now, a sharp-eyed Twitter user has spotted another shard that seems to contain a reflection of Deadpool with his finger to his mouth.

It does definitely look like Deadpool, but is that because it is Deadpool, or is it because we want to see it? Is this one of those Jesus in a piece of toast situations?

More recently, Derek Cornell and Skyler Shuler of the DisInsider Show both expressed confidence that Deadpool will make an appearance. Ryan Reynolds has denied that he’s involved in Doctor Strange 2, but Cornell and Shuler said that “Ryan Reynolds is pulling an Andrew Garfield right now” and “Deadpool’s in it.” The Andrew Garfield reference is, of course, a throwback to when Garfield spent months strenuously denying that he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Marvel fans know full well that actors are often sworn to secrecy about their roles in the MCU, so Reynolds denying involvement frankly doesn’t mean much. It’s also worth pointing out that Cornell and Shuler correctly predicted Captain Carter’s appearance.

Finally—and I include this only for the sake of being thorough—there’s a post on 4Chan, which made its way over to Reddit, that claims to know the details of Doctor Strange 2’s two post-credits scenes. Skip the rest of this paragraph if you’re avoiding even the most outlandishly farfetched potential spoilers. In the mid-credits scene, the post claims, Strange will see Kang the Conquerer and Clea, played by Charlize Theron, in a dream. In the post-credit scene, Deadpool will wander through the ruins of the Illuminati headquarters.

Obviously, if true, this would be a galactically massive leak, and the bigger a leak is, the less seriously we should take it. (After all, wouldn’t Marvel have gotten that post scrubbed from the Internet by now if it were true?) Who knows? Maybe some Marvel staffer decided to throw caution to the wind and get back at their boss. Maybe the 4Channer who posted it is psychic. But again, it seems unlikely.

However, there are enough rumors swirling around about Deadpool at this point that there just may be a kernel of truth to them. We’ll find out for sure on May 6th, when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally hits theaters.
