If, like us, you’ve grown more than weary of the romantic vampires swarming pop culture, and long for something with a bit more, erm, bite, we have some good news. Monster master Guillermo del Toro is bringing his book trilogy The Strain to the small screen, thanks to FX and Lost producer Carlton Cuse. We are pretty excited to see some respectable splatter returned to the now-sparkly genre. Del Toro, an avid fan of all things that go bump in the night (and some of the things that bump back), had explained his interest in vampires at length in an article for the NYTime in 2009.

Originally rumored as a feature film adaptation, The Strain was co-written with Chuck Hogan, who will be taking on the pilot episode and development alongside del Toro. The series takes on themes that are more akin to the viral zombie genre than to classic vampire fare, featuring a CDC doctor, Ephraim Goodweather, who is sent to investigate an outbreak in NYC. Think less Interview With a Vampire and more I Am Legend. Given the popularity of current television horror hits such as The Walking Dead, and the buzz around Cuse’s other in-development project, Psycho prequel Bates Motel, The Strain seems poised to do well.

For an inside look at the published work, check out this trailer on Wired that was put out before the first novel’s release.

One thing’s for sure; a dark-leaning del Toro is always welcome, big screen or small.
