Demi Lovato has just revealed that they are non-binary, and will be using they/them pronouns, and we’re proud. Speaking your truth isn’t always easy, and I’d imagine that being a celebrity makes things 10 times as hard, especially for someone as well known as Lovato. Everyone’s watching what you do, waiting for you to fall, and waiting for that next juicy story to sell and make a payday.

Lovato took a moment to share with fans and friends the changes in their life via a video posted on their Twitter account. The video is shown below:

For those that can’t listen to Lovato’s truth right now, let’s break down what they said.

“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” Lovato explained after coming out with their non-binary news and how they’re embracing this revelation.

Lovato also added that they came to this decision “after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.” The singer has always been open about their personal struggles with mental health. And just recently, we learned about the real details and intricacies of their 2018 near-fatal overdose and how that changed their life forever.

“I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” Lovato said, being raw and honest about how new this is for them and how they will be learning about this change in their life right along with us.

This distinction, this openness, makes it easy to connect with Lovato as they share their experience with us. In turn, their truth and journey are bound to inspire their fans. And it’s something that Lovato wants to do as they find their way in this new world for them.

Also, remember what Lovato said in their tweet thread in their coming out: “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way.” Even Lovato is facing some invalidating reactions in the media and online, and it’s important that we speak up against them until all the trans and non-binary people out there feel safe living their truth.
