Denny’s Is Remixing Atari Games Into Breakfast-Themed Slices of Weirdness

DON'T. QUESTION. DENNY'S.

Today in “What is this? Why is this?”: Denny’s, that bastion of fine American cuisine, has teamed up with Atari to provide the teeming masses with some free mobile games. Their titles: Centipup, Take-Out, and Hashteroids. I think I’m in love. And also hungry. But not for Denny’s. Ew. IHOP all the way.

As you may have guessed, the games—available on Denny’s iPhone/Android app—are breakfastitfied versions of Centipede, Breakout, and Asteroids. Hashteroids, for example

…is an action-packed arcade ketchup shooter where your goal is to destroy the clumps of golden-brown potatoes before they destroy you. Blasts of ketchup will break the hashteroids down, but it will take a bit of strategy and a whole lot of skill to survive. Make sure you also avoid other breakfast items like fried eggs and coffee killers!

And here’s Centipup, a

fast-paced arcade survival game where you must use your magical bottle of syrup to fight off the hypnotized creatures of the Wonderfood Forest. Shoot blasts of sticky, syrupy goodness to transform enemies into eggs and defeat the evil Nannerpuss once and for all.

And, finally, Take-Out

is the brick-by-brick breakfast wall destruction arcade game you’ve been waiting for. Use an egg and your plate to destroy the wall of Denny’s food items. The most you clear, the most points you score!

I’m not quite sure what’s going on here, but regardless: You be you, Denny’s. Cater to that drunk and/or high college student crowd, while also glomming onto the geek set that you catered to with your legendary Hobbit-themed menu. Be the cool kid on the block with your Tumblr famousness. Just throw weird marketing campaigns at the wall until something sticks. It’s not like anyone’s visiting you for your food.
