Detective Pikachu Is Already the Best Movie of 2019, Don’t @ Us

Also there's a Jigglypuff.

Ryan Reynolds is the titular character of Detective Pikachu

The most welcome surprise of the entire month came in the form of the trailer for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith vehicle Detective Pikachu, a buddy comedy about a plucky Pikachu and a would-be trainer who have to solve a mystery! Also, not only can Pikachu talk, but only Smith’s character can understand what he’s saying! And Pikachu, in his sort-of-realistic animated fluffy glory, looks so cute!!!

Listen, this is not the article I would have expected to write about the trailer for this movie. One would assume this film would be freaking bizarre and weird, just Deadpool but with Pokémon. Instead, the film looks downright charming and a bit Zootopia-esque. I’ve been a fan of Smith since The Get Down, and I am thrilled to see him co-leading a film with Reynolds. Despite being a relative newbie to Pokémon lore, I cannot wait to see how these characters play out on the big screen.

Also, there’s a Jigglypuff. I freaking love Jiggypuffs. I don’t know what the plural of Jigglypuff is, and at this point, I’m too afraid to ask. Also, someone on Twitter suggested that the aforementioned Jigglypuff should be voiced by Danny Devito (because of course), and I really hope that pans out.

The Internet is also thrilled about this trailer.

Listen, 2018 is already so goddamn weird that a Pokémon movie trailer that’s basically Sherlock Pikachu being the best part of the month barely surprises me, but credit where credit is due: While Reynolds is a shrewd producer, the charming script was written by Nicole Perlman, who was the one who actually did the leg work to make Guardians of the Galaxy work before James Gunn came and snapped up all the credit and accolades.

Let’s not repeat history and solely praise Reynolds for the pleasant surprise here.

Overall, the world is so terrible, and we all could use a little joy in our lives. Embrace the oddity of Detective Pikachu on a particularly grim day for geek culture, and check out the trailer below and prepare for the influx of Pikachu memes to begin again.
