Diane Lane Is Martha Kent, Snyder Affirms the Importance of the Character
Officially Official
The very second piece of casting on Zach Snyder‘s Superman reboot isn’t Lois Lane, as many people are longing to see, but rather another woman very close to the Man of Steel’s heart: his mom.
Diane Lane, who you might remember as Judge Hershey, the love interest from Judge Dredd (okay, so she’s done a lot of other stuff as well. That one in particular caught our eye), has been cast as Martha Kent, the Kansas farmwife who makes a strange and powerful alien child her own.
Even Snyder admits that she’s a pretty integral part of the Superman story:
This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman.
Snyder has enlarged the role of women in his comic book adaptations before. The role of King Leonidas’ wife in 300 the comic was essentially to tell Leo to come back with his shield or on it. For better or for worse, Snyder gave her character much more screen time in his otherwise incredibly faithful adaptation, as a character who is willing to use all the limited avenues available to her as a Spartan woman to keep her husband’s position safe while he is away, and then straight out murdering the bad guy when he double-crosses her in front of the Spartan senate.
I’m not saying that I want to see Martha Kent sleep with a dude so that nobody forecloses on the farm, I’m just glad that Snyder seems to think about this kind of stuff.
