Sorry, Fandoms: No Doctor Who And Sherlock Crossover
Like "fetch," it just isn't happening.
Expertly dashing the hopes of two Tumblr fandoms at the same time, Steven Moffat said a crossover movie between Doctor Who and Sherlock just isn’t in the cards. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said:
“If people want it, we should give it to them. But I got persuaded by Mark [Gatiss], Benedict [Cumberbatch], Sue [Vertue] and Martin [Freeman] who said, ‘Look, it will never be as good as [fans] think it’s going to be.’ And then I say, ‘Yes but we’ll just bang it out and make it as good.’ Yeah, but you can’t give everybody everything they want all the time. But I’m in the camp of giving them everything they want! But I think they’re sane and right, and I’m just a tart.”
It’s nice to see that Moffat wants to make it work, but if you’ve got the producers and the star talent saying it isn’t going to work, then perhaps there’s something to that. This also wouldn’t be the first time Moffat’s had a hand in deciding both Sherlock and the Doctor’s fate. He’s showrunner for both of the shows, and in that role he steered (then-hopeful-Doctor) Matt Smith away from being the Watson to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock.
Both series have a rich history in leaving fans wondering what could have been. At least they’ll always have that in common. Still, it’s nice to imagine a world where maybe an ambitious movie like this can work out. Like Rose, we’ll be keeping our ears pressed to the wall, hoping for the best. Who knows. Until then, we’ll always have that fantastic Wholock fan mashup.
