Donald Glover Signs Deal to Make More FX Shows, But No New Atlanta Episodes ‘Til 2018
Because, you know, Star Wars and all.
One of the breakout hits of the 2016 television year was Donald Glover’s FX show, Atlanta. At once both funny and irreverent, it provided a sometimes harsh, sometimes lighthearted look at life coming up in the Atlanta rap scene. Thanks to the show’s success, FX has made a deal with Glover, with him signing on to create “new projects for FX.” We already know we’re getting a second season of Atlanta—that much was confirmed as quickly as two weeks after the show first premiered—but that second season (and whatever else Glover might be cooking up with FX) will have to wait until 2018.
The reason for the delay (as disappointing as it is) lies in Glover’s commitment to star in the upcoming Star Wars young Han Solo project. You’ll remember that he was cast to play young Lando Calrissian at the end of last year, much to everyone’s excitement and joy. Somehow, amidst what was surely a heck of an auditioning process, Glover was still able to find room to record a new hit record (Awaken, My Love!) and make an appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. And, with this news today, he still apparently had just enough bandwidth to sign a deal to create even more shows with FX.
It’s a well-deserved deal, too, as Atlanta recently two Golden Globes—Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy (Donald Glover)—and the critical reception just continues to grow warmer and warmer as time goes on. Glover’s proven time and again that he’s a talented, multi-disciplinary artist, and his hustle is admirable, to say the absolute least.
As FX’s president of original programming and FX Productions Nick Grad said to The Hollywood Reporter:
Donald is a remarkable artist, effortlessly shifting from actor to writer, producer, director and musician to create one amazing project after another. Atlanta was just the beginning — the breakout comedy of the year and a series revered as much for its originality as its honest look at the experience of being aspiring, young and black in that legendary city. We’re proud to partner with Donald in an overall deal that will allow him to continue turning his creative vision into incredible television.
It’s a real joy to know that we’ll be seeing a heck of a lot more of Glover’s works across nearly all forms of media, and it’s treat to know that FX stands behind his vision and what he wants to do. While I’m sad that it’ll be a while before we see Atlanta again, I think “getting to film a Star Wars movie” is a fine enough excuse, don’t you?
