The ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Trailer Is a ’50s Dream—And Nightmare

For fans of Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, it’s been a long time that we’ve waited for this trailer. The latest Olivia Wilde movie titled Don’t Worry Darling brings us into the idyllic world of the onscreen 1950s and a perfect family and marriage. Or at least what we think is perfect …

The official trailer for the film shows us what happens when Alice and Jack buy into a new kind of life that begins to crack around them.

So, not only do we get Pugh’s Alice and Styles’ Jack in a very hot relationship, but then it’s paired with Chris Pine as an almost cult-like figure named Frank (who is married to none other than Gemma Chan). Did I dream this movie up and instantly force it into existence? Maybe.

The press release for the film gives us a bit of a look into the movie:

“Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) are lucky to be living in the idealized community of
Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret
Victory Project and their families. The 1950’s societal optimism espoused by their CEO,
Frank (Pine)—equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach—anchors
every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia.

While the husbands spend every day inside the Victory Project Headquarters,
working on the “development of progressive materials,” their wives—including Frank’s
elegant partner, Shelley (Chan)—get to spend their time enjoying the beauty, luxury and
debauchery of their community. Life is perfect, with every resident’s needs met by the
company. All they ask in return is discretion and unquestioning commitment to the
Victory cause.

But when cracks in their idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of
something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can’t help
questioning exactly what they’re doing in Victory, and why. Just how much is Alice
willing to lose to expose what’s really going on in this paradise?”

What to expect

So the trailer did change what I thought this movie was going to be quite a bit. I figured it was a thriller in the same kind of way that The Stepford Wives sort of is. But instead, we’re getting Chris Pine being a cult leader, and to be quite honest, that’s the best casting choice for him. Would I follow Chris Pine if he started a cult? Probably.

It’s a new kind of role for Harry Styles, as we’ve only seen him as a soldier in Dunkirk and then briefly in Marvel’s Eternals as Eros, so watching him play opposite Pugh is exciting for fans of the singer. Also, this seems right up Pugh’s alley. After her work in Midsommar, I’ve been waiting for the next entry into her darker roles, and Alice looks like the perfect followup. Don’t Worry Darling hits theaters this September, so now we can spend the entire summer knowing that 1950s Chris Pine is going to take us to a marriage cult in the fall, and I honestly can’t wait.
