New Dragon Ball Super: Broly Trailer Promises an Epic Super Saiyan Showdown
Wow.
Dragon Ball Super has been a delight for me as a longtime fan of the series overall, especially when it comes to all the dad/husband Vegeta bits. Broly has never been one of my favorite Dragon Ball characters, but just watching the Broly trailer, I truly can’t wait to see this movie.
“A legacy lies in wait, a deadly power is awakening—the legendary Super Saiyan Broly is here!
“Goku and his friends will face their deadliest challenge yet when they experience the power and might of Broly. Will they have enough strength to protect their home or will it take everything and everyone they have to stand against this unshakeable force? Experience the new power level in the latest movie from the Dragon Ball Super story!”
Let’s start with the fact that it looks gorgeous. The ki attacks look beautiful. Goku getting his face smashed through ice looks magnificent, as does watching my two boys go back-to-back to try to stop what looks like a very world-ending move by Broly. “Blizzard” by Daichi Miura is going to be the main theme for the movie, instead of the beloved “Cha-La Head-Cha-La,” but it’s still a solid track, and incorporated into the trailer, it seems to work.
I’m also excited that series creator Akira Toriyama is going to write Broly for the first time. This will be the third of the Dragon Ball Super-era films to be overseen by Toriyama, following Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods in 2013 and Resurrection ‘F,’ and that makes a difference in how characters are written and constructed. In terms of Broly, he hasn’t been seen in a Dragon Ball product since 1994 in Bio-Broly, which … lol.
And now, Broly will be an official part of the Dragon Ball canon. Toriyama has said that the “character and his origin will be reworked, but with his classic image in mind.” The film will also give some insights into the origins of the Saiyans and the supervillain Frieza, and as the second best villain in Dragon Ball, I’m always happy to see Frieza in some capacity.
For the twentieth movie in this beloved franchise, it’s an amazing accomplishment and a super important chapter in the series. If it’s going to add canon elements about the Saiyans, Frieza, and Broly, that’s really exciting and a great way to dive more into the history of these characters.
Those changes and additions are what I’m really interested in seeing when the film is finally released. For fans of the American dub, we sadly won’t be able to see the movie in theaters until January of next year. Japanese audiences will get to see the movie on December 14th, so spoilers will most likely trickle in soon after.
What do you guys think about the trailer? What do you think Toriyama has in mind for Broly?
