Kelly Kapoor Says Dwight Schrute Could Be the Next Michael Scott

As Steve Carrell continues to insist that he’s leaving The Office to the point where we all actually are starting to believe it, a front-runner has emerged to take his place: None other than Rainn Wilson, whom you may know better as Dwight Schrute.

Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello got this tasty tidbit from one of the show’s stars/producers:

“I’d love to see Rain Wilson in that position,” says co-executive producer/co-star Mindy Kaling, who snagged a much-deserved Emmy nominee for co-writing last season’s four-star Jim/Pam wedding episode. “Dwight has become so nuanced — you actually care about him now. I think if [we did a good job laying the groundwork] this coming season he would be a fantastic boss.

“But that’s my dream,” she adds. “It certainly hasn’t been approved by people that are more powerful than me and who make those kind of decisions.”

Kaling, who plays Kelly Kapoor on The Office, acknowledged that she’d really prefer not to have Carrell leave at all, but if that’s the way of things, this is the best of all possible alternatives.

This isn’t particularly surprising, though it’s nice to know that whoever does take over as the new Michael Scott will have been given some good set-up by the shows writers and producers. It’s not clear how this office, or any office, could survive more than a few hours without being burnt to a crisp, compromised by radiation, or otherwise disaster-zoned with Dwight at it’s helm. But I’m sure that Michael will leave Dwight, if he is chosen in the end, with some great parting words. You can’t just thrust him into it without giving him some guidance.
