Blink and You’ll Miss a World Record-Breaking Electric Car Going 0-60 in 1.5 Seconds

Recommended Videos

OK, so you don’t take 1.5 seconds to blink (if you do, you should get that checked), but the above video really drives home the point: 1.5 seconds is an incredibly short amount of time to get up to highway speeds. It’s over before you can really take in what’s happening, which is both an exciting and frightening prospect for driving such a vehicle.

The electric racecar, called “grimsel” and developed by ETH Zurich and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts for the Academic Motorsports Club Zurich (AMZ), was created for record breaking, and it succeeded with flying colors. Its 1.513-second time shaved two full tenths of a second off the previous world record, and it used a light carbon fiber body and individually traction-controlled wheels to pull it off.

AMZ had the world record previously, but they lost it to the University of Stuttgart at the Formula Student competition—a global competition where teams created cars to compete in a variety of events—in 2015, so they’re happy to be back on top this year. AMZ has additional videos for you to learn more about grimsel, what they do, and what the formula student competition is all about—including some shots of the cars in action, which is what you’re really here for. Being a nerd is fun, people.
