Emma Watson To Play A Fantasy Princess In “Game of Thrones-Esque” The Queen of the Tearling

This is just like magic!

The run of Harry Potter books and movies has been over for years now (I’m sorry to bring that up; I know it’s a sore spot for a lot of our readers, not to mention myself), but Potterheads can take some small comfort in the fact that Emma Watson has reportedly landed the lead in another fantasy series. What’s more, she’ll play a character whose plotline will look awfully familiar to fans of one Daenerys Targaryen.

The movie is called The Queen of the Tearling, and it’s based on author Erika Johansen‘s yet-unpublished fantasy trilogy the first part of which is set to come out next year. Harper Collins’ official description reads:

“Set three centuries after a small portion of the human race has populated a landmass that mysteriously emerged in the wake of an environmental catastrophe, the series follows nineteen-year-old princess Kelsea Glynn, who must reclaim her deceased mother’s throne and redeem her kingdom, the Tearling, from forces of corruption and dark magic of The Red Queen, the sorceress-tyrant of the neighboring country, Mortmesne.”

Interestingly, Variety notes that Kelsea, whom Watson will play, “was partly inspired by a speech [Johansen] heard Barack Obama give in 2007.” Oh… kay. My kingdom for someone to find out which speech this is!

Also of interest is the fact that the series has reportedly been described by Harper Collins as a “female Game of Thrones,” though I can’t help but think that any high-profile fantasy series being published these days is likely to get compared to Game of Thrones at some point. Still, there are definite parallels between Kelsea and Daenerys “I will take what is mine with fire and blood” Targaryen. Just based on what we know so far the series seems a little generic YA fantasy for my tastes… but what we know is so little that I’m still plenty excited.

The series has no writer or director yet and is being produced by Harry Potter‘s David Heyman, and for Harry Potter studio Warner Bros., no less. Let’s start the predictions now as to which other Harry Potter actors are going to get cast. There are so many, after all. It’ll be nearly impossible to miss all of them.
