Eureka‘s Six-Episode Pickup Dashed, Show Canceled Instead
so long and thanks for all the fish
Now that’s just mean. Just last week reports were circulating saying that Syfy was prepping to pick up Eureka for six more episodes, possibly its last. Now, syfy has announced that, yes, Eureka is ending, but now it’s not even going to get those last six episodes. As a result, the fifth season of the show will be its last.
The news comes as quite a shock to many fans who, as was mentioned above, thought the show had at least six more episodes to wrap up its story before we said goodbye to the little town for good. Instead, we have this (the official statement as released to Entertainment Weekly):
“After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.”
At the very least, Eureka got five good seasons, which is a pretty good run all things considered. And with this news, the producers and writers will hopefully have time to craft a proper farewell–which is, as EW points out, “like the TV series equivalent of saying, “At least he didn’t suffer,” but it’s still true!
