Extended Trailer for Wayward Sisters, the Supernatural Spinoff About Monster-Hunting Women
The CW has released an extended trailer for the “Wayward Sisters” episode of Supernatural, which will act as a backdoor pilot for the female-centered spinoff series of the same name. Backdoor pilots essentially serve as proofs-of-concept for a full series, but they’re not guarantees that the series will eventually air.
Supernatural follows two brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, who are “hunters” of supernatural monsters that prey on human beings. The ridiculously long-lasting show has a dedicated fan base, but it’s often been criticized for focusing so heavily on male stories, points-of-view, and characters.
The Wayward Sisters spinoff aims to rectify that by focusing on a band of monster-hunting women, all of whom are already part of the Supernatural canon. The show will follow Claire Novak, the daughter of angel Castiel’s (Misha Collins) human vessel; Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes); the sheriff of Sioux Falls, SD who was friends with Bobby; Alex/Annie Jones (Katherine Ramdeen), who was raised by a nest of vampires and escaped; Kaia Nieves (Yadira Guevara-Prip), a dreamwalker whose powers have real-world consequences; Patience Turner (Clark Backo), a psychic who inherited her powers from her grandmother; and Donna Hanscum (Briana Buckmaster), the sheriff of Stillwater, MN who’s often teamed up with Jody Mills. Mills has also adopted Annie Jones and Claire Novak.
In the midseason finale of Supernatural, Sam and Dean Winchester were transported to the Bad Place, a monster-ridden alternate universe where Kaia often found herself dreamwalking. According to the trailer, it’s up to Claire Novak to save them in “Wayward Sisters,” but given that Kaia’s powers had a hand in getting them there, I’d imagine she’ll be part of the solution. And given that this is meant to be a backdoor pilot, my guess is that most of the other women from the spinoff will make an appearance, too.
The “Wayward Sisters” episode of Supernatural will air on Thursday, January 18 at 8PM EST on The CW.
