When it comes to the upcoming live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, it’s safe to say that we’ve been keeping a very close eye on things. We’ve already discussed a lot of the issues we have with this film–namely, the casting of Scarlett Johansson (an actress who is very decidedly not Asian) as the Japanese cybernetic human Major Motoko Kusanagi. In what could be perceived as attempt to further erase the original character’s identity, Johansson’s character will simply be known as “The Major” in the film. Hmmm. Insert frowning emoji here.

Early this morning, the first full trailer was released online after debuting at an event to promote the trailer’s release in Tokyo; it begins with a short introduction by Johansson herself where the actress discusses how excited she is to be a part of the film before kicking things off.

The trailer itself appears to expand on the bite-sized teasers we saw a couple months prior. Along with Johansson, we also see appearances from co-stars Juliette Binoche, Pilou Asbæk and Takeshi Kitano–and all of the intense action sequences and special effects play over a version of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”, which definitely fits the whole cyberpunk theme this film appears to be going for.

Ghost in the Shell hits theaters on March 31, 2017. What are your thoughts on this first official trailer?
