Warner Bros. has released the first image of Brenton Thwaites as Robin/Dick Grayson from their upcoming Teen Titans series, Titans. The live-action series will debut on DC’s proprietary direct-to-consumer digital service, at some point in 2018.

The series will be produced by Weed Road Pictures and Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter serving as executive producers. Berlanti Productions, you may remember, is the company behind The CW’s DC superhero shows, including Arrow, The FlashLegends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.

Robin’s suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon, who has also served as a costume designer for Iron Man and Black Lightning. The released image, with its moody, darkness-and-clouds background, and an intense expression on Thwaites’ face, suggests more of an Arrow tone than a Supergirl/Flash one, but this lighting might just be intended to make the suit look cooler, or to reflect Robin’s particular character traits. I’m intrigued to see where they’re going tonally with this one, given that so much of existing Teen Titans fandom comes from the more comic animated shows.

According to the summary from Warner Bros. Television, Titans “follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire (Anna Diop), Raven (Teagan Croft), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), and many others. Titans is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.”

The cast also includes Dove (Minka Kelly) and Hawk (Alan Ritchson).

Titans will be one of the first shows on the DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service, though it will soon be joined by other planned series like Season Three of Young Justice and an animated series called Harley Quinn. We don’t know when the service itself will launch, or how much it will cost yet.

What do you think of Robin’s new look? Are you excited for Titans?
