After three seasons, Fox has decided to cancel the fantasy crime procedural Lucifer, marking yet another beloved series cancellation in this brutal pilot season. The series stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, the charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome Lord of Hell, who partners with LAPD detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) to take down criminals. The show is based on the comic book characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for Vertigo, and co-starred Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, Tricia Helfer, Scarlett Estevez and Kevin Alejandro.

Showrunner Joe Henderson also expressed disappointment over the series’ abrupt cancellation, which will leave many questions unanswered. “We created a season finale with a huge cliffhanger so that there was no way Fox could cancel us,” he wrote. “Instead, we’re going to frustrate the hell out of you fans. I’m so sorry for that.” Henderson took to social media, urging fans to campaign to revive the series, with the hashtag #SaveLucifer garnering over a million tweets. He was joined by the show’s stars who also tweeted to fans asking them to help save the canceled series.

The cult favorite series joins other Fox cancellations, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Last Man on Earth, The Mick, and The Exorcist, with several shows still on the bubble. Many attribute this leaner schedule to Fox’s five-year deal with Thursday Night Football, which will take over more than 30 hours of space on Fox’s already shortened schedule. Another factor may be the looming Fox-Disney merger, which is guaranteed to shake up series on both networks.

Lucifer may yet escape eternal banishment, and could end up at a new home like fellow canceled series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which was rescued by NBC. Warner Bros. TV, which produces the show, is rumored to be shopping around the series to steaming services and premium cable networks. Because of Lucifer’s DC roots, there is also an in-house opportunity to move the series to new streaming platform DC Universe. The streaming service has already ordered live-action dramas Swamp Thing and Titans to series.
