Fox Gets Into the Business of Making You Dread Musicals With Live TV Version of Grease

it's time to play the music

First it was NBC setting the record for most hatetweeted live television event of the decade with The Sound of Music, and now Fox TV has announced it’ll be bringing a three-hour production of Grease soon to a screen altogether too near to you.

And I don’t want to start some kind of internet rumor about myself and my uncanny prophetic abilities, but here’s a paragraph from an article I wrote in December about NBC’s happy reaction to the massive viewership of their panned production of The Sound of Music and their plans to do more:

NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt told Deadline, that the success of next year’s broadcast “hinges on finding a title that can be rated G, as was The Sound of Music, and has loads of very familiar tunes – and on securing the services of another music star with a large fan base, like [CarrieUnderwood.” So there you have it folks: all your hate tweeting about The Sound of Music means we get to do it all again in a year. Trust me, it’s not going to be that difficult for NBC to find another G rated musical production with songs that everybody knows. They could just do Grease.

Well, it turns out that Fox has the rights to Grease, and they’re throwing it into production for sometime during 2015. That’ll be after NBC airs its follow up to The Sound of Music, Peter Pan. No cast has been announced for either production, though Fox insists Grease Live, as the production goes, it will be a “young ensemble cast.” So, you know, a bunch of high school kids played by 20-30 somethings.
