Frozen 2 Officially Announced!

Apparently, Disney just can't let it go...

Disney’s Bob Iger just announced that Frozen 2 is officially a go at today’s shareholder meeting, after showing a Frozen short that will be playing before all screenings of their new Cinderella film.

Did I love the Academy Award winner for Best Animated Film in 2014? Of course I did. Do I love that Disney finally created a film where the central relationship isn’t one between a princess and a prince, but a relationship between sisters? Totally. Do I sometimes sing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” to myself around the house while I’m cleaning? Yup. But do I think that Frozen 2 is a good idea? I’m not sure.

It’s an obvious move for Disney. Frozen has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide.

Maybe I’m just feeling burned by the horrendous Frozen storyline on the beyond-salvageable Once Upon a Time, but a large part of me sees this as a cash-grabby mistake. After all, what’s the story going to be now that Elsa has accepted her powers and Anna is married? Are they gonna go on adventures? Is Anna gonna develop some kind of power? Is Sven gonna get a love interest? What more is there to say?

And yes, I know that Frozen is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, and so they may be able to borrow elements from the source material that weren’t used in the first Frozen film. But I think I’d be much happier if Frozen remained a single, beautiful entity rather than part of a franchise. Hell, the Frozen merchandising machine is already its own empire. Why wreck a good thing?

How’s The Lion King 25 working out for you, Disney?

[UPDATE] Apparently, Kristen Bell is thrilled about the news!
