Fox Has Delayed Gambit. Will Deadpool 2 Take Its Slot?

Also, Wolverine 3 is still happening?

Recommended Videos

Fox just quietly removed Gambit from its upcoming release schedule, suggesting that the movie needs some more time to stew. Last November, it sounded like Gambit was coming along fine, with Channing Tatum officially signed back on as the title character, and producer Simon Kinberg describing the concept as “a heist movie and a sexy thriller.” That said, this movie was supposed to becoming out in 2016 — that’s right, this year — so it’s no big surprise to see it get pushed back, given that it hasn’t even started production yet.

Fox has added two new big X-Men-related release dates to the schedule: October 6, 2017 and January 12, 2018. They haven’t specified what movies will end up in those slots, but it doesn’t seem unwise to expect Deadpool to end up in the January slot. Ordinarily, dud movies end up stuck with boring ol’ January slots, but Deadpool‘s fandom has already proven that they’re willing to drop everything and hit the box office during that time period, so perhaps Fox hopes to strike gold twice.

Meanwhile, Wolverine 3 is still slated for March 3, 2017. What I really want to know is, when’s Hugh Jackson going to do his mandatory Wolvie cameo in a Deadpool movie? I expected him to show up in the first one, especially after Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman did this hilarious interview together:

These two deserve another shot in a Marvel movie! Wolverine: Origins is dead, long live Wolverine/Deadpool, etc.

As for the Gambit news, well … I just don’t know. I worry that the success of Deadpool might end up taking Gambit in a very weird direction — even if we all would strongly advise Hollywood otherwise.
