Gambit Loses Its Director Yet Again; When Will The Movie Catch a Break?

Recommended Videos

It seems that Gambit can’t catch a break. Alas.

Despite having a filming date all set and ready to go, Fox’s Gambit film has lost its director, Doug Liman, in a “mutual parting of ways.” This comes from The Hollywood Reporter’s sources close to the production, which still has Channing Tatum locked in to act as the card-throwing Cajun. As well, Josh Zetumer (RoboCop, 2014) will still be penning the script.

The movie’s been plagued with delays and an on-again-off-again greenlight status, so much so that it almost seems like we might never see the mutant on the big screen. We do know that it’s supposed to be a “heist movie and a sexy thriller” (uh), and given that Tatum will play the titular role, that’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination. But what we don’t know is when the heck this movie might ever get made. Liman’s departure marks the second time the movie’s lost its director, the first time being when Rupert Wyatt (Planet of the Apes) dropped out last September.

Whatever’s going on behind the curtain, one can’t help but imagine that things are pretty tumultuous around the development of this movie. Given how Josh Trank once implicated studio meddling was to blame for Fantastic Four‘s less-than-stellar reception, it’s not too much of a stretch to suppose that the same could be happening here. But, of course, we don’t know for sure, and any guess would of course be pure speculation.

Here’s hoping a new director might be in the cards (heh) for Gambit. Otherwise, this mutant’s luck may have just run out.
