A Song of Ice and Fire Readers May Be Seeing Red After This Omission Reveal By One Game of Thrones Actor
Haven't you hurt us enough?
Last chance to turn away…you’ve been given “the look.”
Actress Michelle Fairley, who exited the show after her character Catelyn was killed during the Red Wedding, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly (Spoilers for 24 at the source link) about the potential to return. Fans of the book series (and those who don’t mind spoilers) know Catelyn was meant to return as the undead Lady Stoneheart somewhere around the end of Season 4 (a theory perpetuated by Lena Headey’s Instagram feed). We waited, and waited, and some of us (me) actually thought they might do an after credit scene for the finale. They didn’t.
Director Alex Graves previously said they never intended for Lady Stoneheart to appear in Season 4 because there was just too much going on but now Fairley is leading us to believe it’s never going to happen.
I’ll give you a second to cry it out/get angry.
Ok, here’s how the discussion went with Entertainment Weekly:
You couldn’t have missed the online furor over the lack of Lady Stoneheart in theThrones finale. Were you surprised by that attention?
I actually haven’t seen any of that. I don’t look that stuff up. I avoid it like the plague. I was totally unaware. There was a lot of online conversation. I heard third-hand that you were basically told that it’s not likely to ever happen. Is that accurate?
Yeah, the character’s dead. She’s dead.Do you have a preference at all—do you think Catelyn’s arc should end where it ended, or would you be into the resurrection idea?
You respect the writers’ decision. I knew the arc, and that was it. They can’t stick to the books 100 percent. It’s impossible—they only have 10 hours per season. They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show.
You know what would be dramatic and exciting? LADY FREAKING STONEHEART. Sigh.
Keep in mind, Fairley could be flat-out lying. I hope she is. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that sort of thing has happened. Or, she could have no idea what they’re planning exactly. But let’s say she is right…damn would I be disappointed. Not just as a viewer but as a reader. Them excluding that storyline makes me think the character really has no purpose in the end other than to be menacing and that would be a huge bummer.
What do you think?
