Donald Trump Reportedly Worried No One Will Remember George Washington, and … What?

Or: Donald Trump confused by man not being a petty narcissist.

Trump yells nonsense at no one.

Oh brother, here we go again. Donald Trump is running his mouth about George Washington like he’s a mythical figure in history that none of us know about. I’m pretty sure I’ve been learning about George Washington since I was 6 years old and continued to learn about him well into college.

In fact, I came out of Hamilton and wanted to learn even more! So Trump speaking as though Washington is lost to history is … well, a trip to bonkers town. Donald Trump and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, went on a trip to Mount Vernon last year, and Politico released a detailed account—and it truly is a wildly bizarre encounter.

Lucky for us all, the president continued to go on a tangent about Washington on his trip the home of our first president, saying that Washington should have put his name on it, because “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.”

Washington may not have named it himself, but at least he has a pretty important part of America named after him, which a reporter pointed out at the time.

He also reportedly questioned whether or not Washington was “really rich,” a question—in Trump’s experience, at least—frequently asked of presidents. Maybe Mike Pence should have reported back to Donald Trump, after his excursion to see Hamilton, about the way we still talk about our first president. Either way, I’m glad to know Donald Trump is still very much focused on the forgotten men and women of America, apparently including George Washington.
