Moonlight, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Black Mirror, Star Trek Beyond and More Nominated for GLAAD Media Awards

Recommended Videos

The nominations are out for the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards and, unsurprisingly, La La Land is nowhere to be found. That’s because the musical, while beautiful, failed to prominently present any LGBTQIA characters (Plus, having John Legend as a supporting character instead of lead, despite his being the most musically gifted member of the cast, is a major party foul).

Instead, Moonlight and Star Trek Beyond were the only wide release films to garner recognition. The former centers on a gay black man struggling with identity while growing up in Miami, while the latter casually introduced Sulu as gay. In the TV categories, it’s nice to see under-appreciated shows like Crazy Ex-GirlfriendWynonna Earp, Survivor’s Remorse and Brooklyn Nine-Nine get some love. Meanwhile, it’s not surprising that shows like Orphan Black, Black Mirror, Transparent and Modern Family would snag nominations.

And after the New York Times removed the Best Selling Comics list from their publication, I’m excited that GLAAD has included comics here, with the likes of Black PantherDC Comics BombshellsLove is Love, Lumberjanes and more all vying for an award.
