David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw to Star in Bad Robot’s God Particle
Daivd Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are set to star in God Particle, produced by J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. Nigerian-American filmmaker Julius Onah is directing, with a script by Oren Uziel.
Here’s the 2012 synopsis for God Particle:
After a physics experiment with a large hadron accelerator causes the Earth to seemingly vanish completely, the terrified crew of an orbiting American space station is left floating in the middle of now-even-more-empty space. When a European spacecraft appears on their radar, the Americans must determine whether it’s their salvation, or a harbinger of doom.
The more recent synopsis seen at Variety confirms the film is set in the future, but is a bit vague about the details:
It centers on a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.
The Wrap adds that the film “follows an American space station crew who, believing they have destroyed Earth via a Hadron accelerator, allow the crew of hostile nations to board their ship, with disastrous results.” There’s not a lot of detail about who the two will play, but seeing as both actors are British, it seems likely that they’ll be on the European spacecraft. Or maybe they’re British astronauts on an American ship. Or they’ll just do American accents.
Abrams, who called the Oscars “a wake up call,” stated recently that he wanted the teams to be “representative of the country we live in,” and it seems he’s coming through. I’m excited to see more of Oyelowo and Mbatha-Raw on screen in general, but particularly in sci-fi, an genre that especially needs more diversity. God Particle comes out Feb. 24, 2017.
