Google+ Launches Image Macro Services, Collides Head-On With Memetastic Internet
Apparently not content to just go after Facebook, Google has announced plans to bring the image macro to Google+. Rolling out over the coming days, the service will allow users to add text over the top of their images like a veritable meme factory.
The process is apparently quite painless. According to Google+:
To try it out, drop a photo into the sharebox on Google+, then click the “Add text” button underneath the photo. Type in something funny, then share and enjoy.
Giving these tools to their users could turn Google+ into a one-stop-shop for meme creation. They are essentially giving the tools for users to create and share these kind of images. Coupled with the filtering power of Circles on Google+, this could be quite attractive to the meme-savvy user.
My only beef with the plan is that it’s kind of a weird fit for Google. Google has not established its reputation on being hilarious, or trying to cash in on “hilarious” Internet trends. They have launched a suite of successful projects built around adapting their core strengths — search, huge ammounts of data, massive server capacity. Sure, this is going to make Google+ more fun (maybe), and might breathe some renewed interest in the stagnant social media platform (maybe), but when I imagined Google applying their know-how to social networking, this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.
Then again, the Google+ team has shown to be extremely good at determining what features users are looking for in a social network. Maybe this is exactly what the Internet has been clamoring for.
