Arya and Sansa Stark Will Be a Pair of Li’l Badasses In This Season of Game of Thrones

Recommended Videos

Less than a week to go until it’s time to log into our parents’ HBO Go account turn on the TV and watch the season four premiere of Game of Thrones. Deep breaths, everyone. To whet your appetite, we have some miscellaneous bits and bobs from the many, many cast interviews that have been popping up. Specifically: Sophie Turner and Rory McCann talking about Sansa haters and what season four holds for the Stark daughters.

In the list of “Things to dislike about people who hate on Sansa Stark,” there’s a big #1 on the list: They’re objectively wrong. I mean, different stokes for different strokes, etc. etc., but seriously, I just don’t get it when people rag on Sansa. She gets called weak, but she’s a teenage girl living among politically savvy murderers who have a hate-on for her and her family, and still she’s staying alive and leaning to play the game. And now we have something else to add to that list: They made Sophie Turner sad. Said the actress in an interview with YOU Magazine:

“When I was younger it really sucked, because I think a lot of the other characters were fan favourites. When you’re 13 and you don’t really understand the business and your best friend is getting a lot of love and you’re getting a lot of hate… well, it was difficult.”

How dare you people?!

In season four Sansa will “get even more ballsy,” Turner explains. “In a lot of TV shows out there, the women are the weak ones and the men are the strong ones. In this show it flips – you see the women being the ones that you don’t really want to meddle with. Sansa’s one of the most intelligent characters on the show. She’s been plotting it all in her head from day one. She’s the dark horse.”

That’s right. Bow before your Queen!

In the first quote that “best friend” may refer to Maisie Williams, whose Arya Stark is a favorite due in large part to her fan-friendly snarkiness and violent tendencies. The former is definitely something that will continue in season four. Says Rory McCann, who plays reluctant frenemy Sandor Clegane:

“We see him and Arya on their mad road trip, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake and arguing all the way so somehow it’s funny as well. We seem to be doing double the swordplay and I’ve still got bruises from the fights. There are some moves that have never been seen before.”

But before you get all excited, keep in mind what Williams herself said about season four Arya: That “she’s not the same anymore. You can’t root for her forever, because she’s not there to be your favorite character.”

I doubt that’ll stop too many people.
