The World Really Is Over: Gravity Falls Ending in Early 2016

In a post on Tumblr, Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch shared a bit of news about the show’s future: this season will be its last. After the conclusion of the “Weirdmageddon” arc, the show will end, and there’ll be no more Gravity Falls as we know it. Hold on to your stuffed Waddles, folks, this one’s a heartbreaker.
A lot of that heartbreak comes from the fact that this announcement comes just a few days before the penultimate episode, “Weirdmageddon II: Escape From Reality,” which premieres tonight. However, the decision to end the show was made much earlier–just before starting work on Season 2, actually. But according to Hirsch’s post, it wasn’t up to him to wait so long to share this news. He was asked to delay the announcement because people were hoping he would change his mind.
It’s important to note that the show isn’t being cancelled. It’s Hirsch’s decision to end the show, and to be frank, I’ll always respect creators’ decisions to end their shows whenever they want. Gravity Falls is a show that resonated with so many people on so many different levels, so giving it a proper goodbye seems only right.
Hirsch’s post is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Hirsch addressed the idea that this was the plan all along saying, “Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever. It’s meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer, and in a larger sense a story about childhood itself. The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious–and why you should cherish it while it lasts.”
You can read the full post below, which inclues a quick Q&A that can really only come from the mind of Hirsch.
Gravity Falls‘ penultimate episode, “Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality” premieres tonight, Monday, November 23rd, and the show’s finale, “Weirdmageddon III” will premiere in early 2016.
