Dream Pairings: Tom Hardy Thinks Christopher Nolan Should Direct a Bond Movie
In the great world of fancastings and dream pairings, the thought of a Christopher Nolan-directed James Bond gets me excited in so many different ways. Really, I only have Tom Hardy to thank for such excitement, as it was he who brought up the idea in a chat with The Daily Beast. He said:
Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie. Because Daniel [Craig] is so good, and what [Sam] Mendes and Barbara [Broccoli] have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard reimagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that’s a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound—again.
They got to talking about Bond only because Hardy was once rumored to possibly be replacing Daniel Craig, should Craig ever opt to leave behind the 007 title. Given the rumors that have been swirling around about whether Craig’s enthusiasm to remain, the conversation about who may replace him is pretty well-trodden territory. As well, the rotating cast of directors who have taken on helming Bond movies has been a real interesting thought exercise, too.
It’s not hard to imagine that a Nolan-directed Bond feature would be a bit of a departure from the Bond we know and possibly love today. It’ll be hard, though, as Hardy astutely points out that Mendes and Broccoli have already, in a very not-so-small way, re-invented Bond with the introduction of Craig’s gritty, “hammer-not-scalpel” Bond reboot of sorts.
But Nolan’s shown what he’s capable of doing with a franchise, given his astonishing work on his Batman trilogy. If someone can find a way to improve upon what the latest Bond movies have been able to deliver, it would certainly be Nolan.
Hardy, as well, would actually be an intriguing choice to play Bond. He’s certainly got a rougher edge to him, as evidenced by his joint work with Nolan in The Dark Knight Rises and in his now-iconic Mad Max in Fury Road. But he’s also able to harness and bring about a refined, wily sense of discretion, as shown in his work in Inception, another Nolan flick.
Basically what I’m saying is I would watch the everloving heck out of a Hardy/Nolan Bond film. I mean, wouldn’t you?
