Despite Rumors, Harrison Ford Will Still Not Be In the Blade Runner Sequel … Probably

Rumory

You may have read something yesterday about the possibility of Harrison Ford coming back to Blade Runner after it was made pretty clear that the new movie would not feature his character, Rick Deckard. We chose to ignore it, because it seemed like a non-story with no real details to report. But now, the head of Alcon Entertainment Andrew Kosove says that rumors of Ford’s return to Ridley Scott‘s new flick were “absolutely patently false.” Or, at least, “quite unlikely.” So … which is it?

When the new Blade Runner film was announced, people wondered (naturally) if this was going to be a remake, a reboot, etc. Turns out, it was looking more and more like a sequel. Since it was going to be a continuation of the story, there was always the possibility of Ford reprising his role as the replicant hunter. However, this was not going to be the case.

Then, rumors started surfacing earlier this week that the exact opposite might be happening, that Ford might join the new cast after all.

That didn’t last long, though. Especially since absolutely nothing concrete came from Alcon, Ford, or Scott, or anybody at all. And now, Kosove has issued this statement, saying “It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner,” and comparing the new Blade Runner to Scott’s new Alien movie, Prometheus:

“To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie [in] and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.

“What Ridley does in Prometheus is a good template for what we’re trying to do. He created something that has some association to the original Alien, but [that] lives on its own as a standalone movie.”

But then, there was this:

Kosove said that Ford’s potential involvement in the film further down the line was possible but “quite unlikely”.

Dude, you’ve completely undone the most definitive part of the denial by saying “quite.” You have still left this open, and until the actual movie comes out, everyone will forever wonder if Harrison Ford is going to be making some kind of appearance. (Okay, that’s not “forever,” but still.) At least we have some kind of idea what to expect from this new Blade Runner movie, based on how Scott approached Prometheus.
