The Haunting of Hill House Trailer Is Here to Keep You Up at Night

Stranger Things may not be coming back to Netflix this October, but the streaming service still has plenty of scares in store for Halloween. The trailer for The Haunting of Hill House has dropped, and it’s got all of our favorite tropes: creepy kids, a haunted mansion, and stripped-down creepy cover of a popular song (in this case, it’s a jangly piano rendition of “Our House” by Crosby, Stills and Young).

The series was created by Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) and stars Carla Gugino (who was also in Gerald’s Game), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People), and Elizabeth Reaser (The Twilight Saga). The series follows a family with five children who grow up in the most haunted house in America. The series will follow the kids as adults, who are drawn back to Hill House after a family tragedy, with flashbacks to their childhood in the mansion. Apparently, growing up in a haunted house will really mess you up.

The series is an adaptation of the classic Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, which follows four strangers as they spend the summer in Hill House investigating supernatural occurrences. The novel is regarded as one of the best ghost stories of all time, and has already been adapted into two movies and a play.

The first film, The Haunting (1963) was directed by Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) and starred Julie Harris, Russ Tamblyn and Claire Bloom. It was well received and went on to become a cult horror classic. The remake, also called The Haunting, was directed by Jan de Bont (Speed) and starred Lili Taylor, Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones. It is … real bad. If you ever wanted to watch Liam Neeson get his ass kicked by a fountain statue, then this is the movie for you.
