Captain America 3 May Come With An Extra Helping Of Hawkeye, Plus The Defenders And Doctor Strange Rumors
All the Marvel gossip that's fit to blog.
In a recent interview with Collider, Jeremy Renner said there are “rumblings” that Hawkeye may play a large role in 2016’s Captain America 3. Please, say pizza dog will be there, too?
Said Renner of his future with Marvel, “There are rumblings of Captain America. I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man [laughs]. I’m trying to stay home and I can’t.” If Hawkeye does play a vital role in the next Cap, Collider hypothesizes that could be good news for fans awaiting a spectacularly overdue female-led movie from Marvel:
…if Renner starring in Captain America 3 means Johansson won’t be a part of the film, might that mean Marvel is finally prepping a standalone Black Widow movie for Johansson? […] putting Renner in the film could be Marvel’s way of adding Avengers connective tissue to the movie while keeping Johansson’s Marvel contract open for a different film altogether.
While we wait for any confirmation on Hawkeye and Black Widow news, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos has come forward to share some more details about the streaming service’s upcoming crop of Marvel shows, namely that The Defenders series “will not be afraid to go darker” than Marvel movies. (Sure, but good luck trying to out-gravitas Gotham, guy.) Sarandos says that Defenders will be similar to but possibly darker than The Avengers:
It was really based on the theatrical model of The Avengers. Could you take another group of characters, The Defenders, and go about it the same way? Normally, they do the big movie and then eventually they get to the group origin story. Having 13 hours to tell each of these stories, you can go right to the origin story and the action at the same time.
As for more cross-pollination between Marvel’s TV series and its cinematic universe, Sarandos is game, although Feige cautions it’s “early days for that.” Says the Netflix head,
[A crossover] has definitely been talked about. Daredevil is already shooting, since that’s out first. Eventually the series will run very close together. You can then have a separate season where the characters will cross over.
Phew. And finally, just because Jon Hamm has publicly denied all Don Strange rumors does not mean the anonymous sources of the world can rest! We now present for your consideration Boardwalk Empire’s Jack Huston, whom This Is Infamous‘ “sources” claim is now “definitely in the running” for the titular Doctor Strange role. Huston will appear in the forthcoming Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, so if he does nab Strange, at least he’ll be well-versed in battling a variety of foes (gangsters, zombies, what else is there?).
