HBO has just announced its inaugural HBOAccess Writing Fellowship, an 8-month (plus) program designed to bring more diverse voices to HBO and Cinemax programming and give emerging talent a leg-up into the industry.

The Fellowship will kick-off with a one-week master class at HBO’s Santa Monica campus followed by an 8-month writing phase where fellows work with execs on “a half-hour or hour script suitable for HBO or Cinemax.” The program will end with a staged HBO reading designed to showcase writers to the entertainment industry.

Kelly Edwards, Vice President of HBO Talent Development, explains

We are looking for emerging writers with a deep passion for storytelling and a unique voice who will want to bring that talent to HBO and Cinemax. In turn, they will be nurtured by some of the best creative executives and showrunners in the business. HBO has a long legacy of supporting writers and we are excited we can begin those relationships at this early stage.

Women and people of color 21 or older who are eligible to work in the U.S. and meet the program’s definition of emerging (written more than one feature film, two produced plays, or been a staff writer on more than thirteen episodes of a network or cable series? Get outta here!) are encouraged to apply using the Without a Box portal. Applications open March 4th and will close when 1,000 submissions have been received.

Unfortunately, although HBO will offer a “small stipend to those selected,” participants will be responsible for their own travel, lodging and expenses.
