How to Make a Spotify Pie Chart
It's tune time, baby.
We live in an interesting time, when there aren’t a lot of actual resources to help people come to a sense of self-actualization, but there are a lot of fun little ways to self-identify in the short term. One such way is through Spotify, where all the zoomers eagerly await their yearly wrap-ups as a way of telling the world, with minimal effort, This is meeeeee!
Of course, I say this without malice. I was always very quick to share my own results, after all.
Now, there’s yet another tool for this kind of self-examination: the Spotify Pie Chart, a third-party app created by UCLA student Darren Huang. Click that link to get to the website!
What the pie chart does is “Bake Your Monthly” Spotify pie, taking into account what seems to be a mash-up of your current playlists, your monthly faves, and the genres & artists you tend to circulate back to by attaining (voluntary) access to your Spotify profile. I’m judging this based off my own pie:
While some of these artists have been on my rotation heavily this year, others just sort of float back into my radar every once in a while, and others are only on a playlist I use every once in a blue moon. I’d be curious to see Darren Huang release an official statement on how the “Pie Boy” gets its data, since I’ve definitely listened to Sweet Trip more often than the Persona 5 soundtrack this year. Again, since I have a playlist dedicated to that soundtrack, I’m assuming that’s why it’s ranked higher. (Or maybe I just don’t know my own listening habits quite as well as I thought I did…)
Either way, it’s a super cool and fun little tool to see what you’re listening to, and it changes every month with your listening habits—hence the “monthly pie” slogan. If you’re looking for something to share with your friends, or you’re just curious about your own habits, I highly recommend giving it a look!
And also, if you do, please share your results down below. “For science.” Definitely not just because I want to know what our dear readers our listening to.
