Hugh Jackman Talks the Spider-Man Cameo He Never Got
Excelsior!
So we all know why the Avengers and the X-Men can’t get together, and why Spider-Man is right out, but there was a time, years ago, when the X-Men were riding high as stars of the highest profile Marvel Comics movie ever made, and Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man was just a twinkle in Sony’s eye. And in that time, some nobody named Kevin Feige tried to get Hugh Jackman into a walk-on part in this new Marvel-based movie, maybe even start some kind of extended continuous universe of stories.
I mean, haha, what a dumb idea!
Jackman told Huffpo the story of his almost-appearance in 2002’s Spider-Man:
We really tried to get me to come on and do something, whether it was a gag or just to walk through the shot or something. The problem was, we couldn’t find the suit. The suit was stuck in some thing. And so when they were in New York when I was there, we couldn’t get it together.
You couldn’t find the suit? We’re talking about Wolverine here. Just put Hugh Jackman in some jeans and a flannel shirt, gel up his hair and go. But I suppose if 20th Century Fox was going to let their licensed property walk into a Sony Entertainment movie, they’d want him to look the way he does on all the posters for the movie, not the way he does for, you know, the majority of the movie.
Jackman went on to talk about how he’s talked with folks at Fox about getting that Avengers crossover going, but “someone reminded [me] that the amount of money Fox paid compared to the amount of money Disney paid is very different [laughs]. So how you split that pie up? God knows.” He still holds out hope, though, and so will I, because I’d like to see a bored Tony Stark attending a charity dinner for some gifted and talented school he’s never heard of but that Pepper says is important and a bored Wolverine attending a Xavier School benefit collide. At the very least, it’d probably be easier to find the necessary suits for that scene.
