Ian McKellen Shares Life Advice, Overlooked Roles, and Fancasts in Charming IMDB Q&A
Ian McKellen had a chat with IMDB for his new film, Mr. Holmes, and answered some fan questions on Twitter. While he unfortunately didn’t answer our question about a possible cooking show, he did share some lovely wisdom. Here are few of his answers:
“You think Patrick Stewart can do a better Gandalf than you?”

James Bond of course. Ridiculous that I’ve been overlooked. https://t.co/PrKwYHvCJO — Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) November 17, 2015
Advice for his younger self (and really anyone):
Be nice to other people. Watch other people act. Learn how to make a decent custard. https://t.co/9CAuu6x96k
On what the younger generation can learn from Sherlock Holmes:
Not a lot. You don’t want to be like Sherlock Holmes. He’s miserable! https://t.co/r5sa5kPIiO — Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) November 17, 2015
When asked who should play in him a biopic.
Oh, Eddie no… Eddie’s too beautiful. I think Tom Hiddleston could do a good job. He looks a bit like my father. https://t.co/Rt4PWi4s2V

Mind you, when I was Benedict Cumberbatch’s age I looked a lot like him. https://t.co/Rt4PWi4s2V — Ian McKellen (@IanMcKellen) November 17, 2015
You can read the rest of the Q&A on his Twitter! I’ll just be over here making custard and thinking about who Ian McKellen’s bond guy would be.
