Idris Elba As the Next James Bond? Do Want!
Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. Yes.
Skyfall‘s Naomie Harris had something interesting to say when asked in an interview with The Huffington Post about the possibility of a black James Bond. Namely, that fellow Londoner Idris Elba (The Wire, Thor, Prometheus, Pacific Rim) might be up for the role after Daniel Craig leaves.
Yes, please!
Says Harris:
I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris [Elba] and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli [James Bond producer] and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.
Note that Harris doesn’t say Elba spoke with Broccoli specifically about being cast at James Bond. And even if that discussion were underway, Craig’s still under contract for two more Bond films, so whoever ends up playing Bond after him probably won’t take the reins until, as Indiewire calculates, at least 2018. Idris Elba will be 46 then, making him eight years older than Craig was when he took up the role. And even if age weren’t an issue (which I don’t think it should be, as Elba would be a perfect Bond regardless), a lot can happen in six years. So who knows?
I for one am kind of distressed by this news, because now if Elba isn’t the next James Bond I’ll just be disappointed by whomever they do cast. Elba is 007 for me now. Headcanon: Acquired.
