Things We Saw Today: ‘Insecure’, Jennifer Hudson Win Big at NAACP Image Awards

The 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards took place this weekend, honoring the achievements of people of color in the entertainment industry. The big winners of the night included the final season of HBO’s Insecure, which took home the trophy for outstanding comedy series. The show’s creator and star Issa Rae won outstanding actress in a comedy series, with outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series going to Natasha Rothwell.

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson won outstanding actress in a motion picture for her performance as Aretha Franklin in the film Respect. Hudson also took home the entertainer of the year trophy, beating out fellow nominees Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Regina King, and Tiffany Haddish. Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Pulitzer Prize-winning creator of the 1619 Project, received the Social Justice Impact Award.

Samuel L. Jackson took home the Chairman award, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won the President’s award for distinguished service. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent a message of support to the Ukraine, and announced their partnership with the NAACP to create the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award, which will be “given annually to leaders creating transformational change at the intersection of social justice and technology.”

Other winners included Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, which won outstanding motion picture and best supporting actress for Regina King and Will Smith, who won outstanding actor for his role in ‘King Richard’.
