Tell Us: What’s So Great About Firefly?

Help me out, and tell me what you love about the show.

Remember when I put Firefly on a list of shows that Netflix should not try to revive, and Firefly fans went bonkers? I’ve been trying to watch the show as a sort of penance, but honestly, I keep falling asleep during the first episode. Please tell me what you love about Firefly so I can try to see it the same way you do.

Most of the commenters who were angry at me for putting Firefly on that list seemed to erroneously think that I put it there because I hate the show, but that’s not true. I certainly don’t love it, but I’ve seen some of the episodes and they’re pretty good. According to my Netflix account I made it most of the way through the fourth episode when I tried watching the show sometime last year.

I just feel like there’s something I’m missing. Whatever it is that the diehard fans of this show love about it, I’m not seeing. After the reaction we got on my Netflix list we thought it would be fun if I went through and did weekly recaps of all the episodes of Firefly. For about a week now I’ve been trying to get through the first episode, but I keep falling asleep.

And look, I have a six-month-old daughter. She is the reason I’m so tired and fall asleep during the show, because that’s what six-month-old babies do, they slowly kill you. I’m not saying Firefly is boring, but I’m not seeing anything in it that compels me to stay up and finish an episode. I’m not falling asleep watching other Cheers.

I know this is going to illicit more angry comments and people telling me I should just go die, (Actual comment, from an actual person, brave enough to comment anonymously on the Internet!) but that’s not the intent. I want to enjoy this show as much as its fans seem to. I’m trying. So please, tell me why you love Firefly. I like what I have seen of the show, but so many people seem to love it. I want to love it too.
