iZombie Recap: “Max Wager”

Mo' money. Moore problems.

Recommended Videos

How much would you be willing to bet that this week’s iZombie was totally great? Because after “Max Wager,” I’m feeling like a gambling gal.

In all seriousness, if you’ve been watching iZombie these past few weeks, you know that taking a bet like that would be all sorts of silly since obviously this show is on a total roll. Then again, if you could get someone who hasn’t been watching the show to get on this, maybe it would be worth your while, as you’d obviously go home with a bunch of moola/glory. Because (SPOILER ALERT!) “Max Wager” was another great example of why more people need to be tuning into this show, and the proof is laid out in pun-derful ways below.

BRAINSSSY:

  • Was this week’s opener the punny-est title card yet? Added bonus: It made us think Ravi and Peyton were snuggled next to each other for a sweet second.
  • Anyone else immediately assume that Mr. Sheldon was a cat? And anyone else equally thrilled when he turned out to be a turtle/new friend of Clive?
  • The scene between Blaine and his evil dad (Angus) was primo. Their strained, jokey chemistry! I mean, that line about saving money on private school? Just such a egotistic rich dad thing to say! And that hat? Such a dick dad had to wear!
  • Also, is Angus already dead for reals? Because that was fast and also should really get Blaine’s storyline moving even faster.

  • On the topic of Blaine, another great “Max Wager” moment was when he transitioned from talking with to killing his grandfather. Clearly there was something there and more than just a shared taste in music. Also, is it just me, or is David Anders getting better and better as the season goes on?
  • Hands up if you loved the part where Liv talked about Philly Cheesesteak … the horse. “She’s a female in a male field….”
  • Hands up if you also liked how Clive got all “Liv when she saw NSYNC when she was 10” on guest star Rick Fox (who played faux former NBA star Calvin Owens)!
  • Still getting over Princess Sparkles making a condom unicorn. Like this could not be more genius.

  • Yay for Peyton getting her own scene this episode! And one with some actually juicy turns of events! Also, how damn creepy is that guy who essentially said he might off her at a later date?! Speaking of, what would we do if Peyton died this season!?! (I’m sorry in advance for the premature heart attack!)
  • Another yay for Liv not having to actually get naked despite all the semi-sex scenes this episode! Major showed more skin than her (hey, G string!), which is a nice change of pace on television.
  • And one final yay for Major and Liv not having real deal sex. I’ll get more into this in NOT-SO BRAINSSSY, but I think that was the best decision for them both, and perhaps not just from a “He could turn into a zombie even with a condom!” perspective. And hey, don’t their cyber sex sessions still seem kinda great?

NOT-SO BRAINSSSY:

  • Did NOT like the beginning with Major and Liv being all lovey dovey in the kitchen. Again, I don’t know if I support this relationship given Major’s up and down emotional state (to paraphrase RuPaul says, if you can’t love yourself and stop doing dirty deeds for evil overlords, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?). Also, I feel like we still have a lot to learn about Liv, but would she really be cool parading around in no pants in front of her BFFs and work friend? I honestly don’t know at this point, even if we can all act a little weird when we’re in L-O-V-E (or L-U-S-T for that matter).
  • “I’m Major.” “You certainly are!”
  • We didn’t get a scene of Ravi buying all those condoms, and that’s a true crime.

iZombie airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Canadians can catch it on Shomi.
