James Gunn Would Like a Nebula Solo Film, but Is That What We Want?

With Marvel dragging it’s feet on a Black Widow solo film and a Captain Marvel movie several years away, things are looking mightily empty on the female-led superhero movie front. That shouldn’t come as a shock since women are still heavily underrepresented in Marvel films. The comic book giant has addressed this and expressed plans to do better in the future but we need more action, not words. That hasn’t stopped director James Gunn from speaking (and slightly bragging) about featuring strong, complex women in his films. Even then he falls short because the female characters in his films are still exponentially outnumbered by their male counterparts.

Continuing that conversation, Gunn took to Twitter to speak about his plans for Nebula, Gamora’s adopted sister, in Guardians of the Galaxy. Responding to another user who said she should have her own film, he wholeheartedly agreed. “I have a few favorites myself, but I agree that Nebula should lead her own film,” he wrote before adding, “It’s something I’ve thought about from the beginning.” While the idea seems intriguing, I’m struggling to see how this would be executed.

Wouldn’t Gamora be the more obvious choice? I mean, her complicated relationship with Nebula was one of the highlights of the film but that was quickly brushed to the side to make room for Star Lord’s feels. Even if he did expand upon that, where else would he take Nebula? Would he give her a Darth Vader-esq arc where we watch her go from promising youngster to falling under the control of a dark and powerful creature—in this case, Thanos? But Darth Vader gets his redemption and Nebula does not at the end of the first movie. Maybe she will in Vol. 2?

In the end, none of this matters because it’s highly unlikely that a Nebula solo film would ever come to light. Still, I think it’s Gamora who deserves her own solo outing. Movie gods, make it so.
