Jason Momoa’s Portrayal of Aquaman Won’t Make You Laugh

Recommended Videos

Jason Momoa assured the audience at Fan Expo that he will not be “busting out a bunch of jokes” as Aquaman in the upcoming DC Universe films. When asked by a fan if his version of Aquaman would bear any similarity to other roles that Momoa has played — specifically, whether his portrayal would “scare” anybody — Momoa responded,

I like bringing a lot of different colors to a character. Maybe you’ve seen me in Bullet to the Head; I didn’t just play a bad guy in that. I didn’t play Drogo as a bad guy. I like to put many different colors and flavors in it … Generally speaking, I try to make very complex characters.

Momoa has heard about the various Aquaman memes and “fish jokes”, but when asked to address them, he heaved a deep sigh. He then went on to say,

It’s cute and funny, people make fun of him, there’s a bunch of jokes about him, but I’m like, “Just wait. Let’s just wait a little bit, and then you can make jokes.”

The costume designer for Batman v. Superman has already pointed out how devoted Jason Momoa has been to this character (“It was pretty hard to get Jason to get out of his Aquaman costume. It really became part of him”), so it doesn’t surprise me to hear Momoa affirm him determination to bring this character to life in a nuanced, complex way.

Are you excited to see Momoa’s take on Aquaman?
